Barbara Walters will be taking time off from The View over the next several weeks so she can have surgery to replace a heart valve.
Walters, 80, made the announcement herself on The View Monday and said her time off would begin “later this week.”
Although Walters said she had known about her heart problem “for many months,” her colleagues on The View learned about it only a few minutes before viewers did. Said Walters, “I thought it best not to talk about it too far in advance.” She said the problem had been diagnosed by an echocardiogram.

“You scared?” asked co-host Whoopi Goldberg. Walters laughed and said, “Only you would ask that question.” Walters continued, “I don’t think I’m really scared; I’m glad it’s going to be over with. It’s going to be taken care of. And it’s been on my mind for a long time.”
Walters said that since The View would be taking a hiatus in any case during July and August, now was a good time for her to take time out for the surgery.
She said she was planning to come “roaring back” in September for the show’s new season. (ABC News)
